I used to live my whole life in fear and it held me back from pretty much everything in life. Everything from going to new places to meeting new people; I lived in fear of anything unfamiliar.
I was especially afraid of anything that pushed me out of my comfort zone (which couldn’t have possibly gotten much smaller) towards my dreams.
The crazy thing is, I had dreams. Lots of them. But in every one of them, I saw myself needing to do things and say things, and go to places I was afraid to make the dream come true. So my belief that they would become a reality was pretty slim.
Until I discovered the power of positive affirmations. One of my favorite ways to speak out positive affirmations is through songs that help overcome fear. Before I get to the list, I wanted to give a quick explanation of why this works.
Science Behind Positive Affirmations
I can’t tell you exactly what it was, but it changed the way I did everything.
Studies have shown that positive self-affirmations “can minimize the anxiety, stress, and defensiveness associated with threats to our sense of self while keeping us open to the idea that there is room for improvement.” (Source)
Basically, what it’s saying is that our fear, (the feeling of anxiety, stress, and the need for defense) can be reduced when we use positive affirmations.
Affirmations don’t work just for fear, but it’s the topic of today’s post. If you want to check out affirmations for other things, check out this post on DevelopGoodHabits.
It was in this post that I found this easy to understand explanation: “Affirmations are simple messages. Repeated over-and-over, they begin to worm their way into your mind. Slowly changing both your thinking and your reality. These positive affirmations might begin as wishful thinking. But they end up becoming the reality of your life.”
One of the reasons that positive affirmations work is because they prepare your brain for the change of course that you are planning.
Your positive words will literally begin to change your thoughts.
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “your thoughts determine your actions and your actions determine your future.”
Imagine the power that positive affirmations to overcome fear will have on your ability to go after your dreams in life!
One of my favorite ways to do this is through songs, which is why I have put together a list of my top go-to songs from Christian artists for overcoming fear. Check them out below!
8 Christian Songs to Help Overcome Fear and Chase Your Dreams
1) The Breakup Song – Francesca Battistelli
I recently heard this song played on the radio and I immediately loved it!
Sometimes we just need to announce out loud that we’re officially breaking up with the fear that is holding us back in life.
It might sound a little crazy, but take some time to speak directly to your fears and officially break up with them. It’s time to give the room that your fear used to take up, to the goals and dreams you have for your life!
I hope this song gives you some encouragement to break up with your fears today!
2) Overcome – Elevation Worship
This song is one that is encouraging! It declares that we are overcomers in all things in life.
Anytime I’m feeling down or overwhelmed, this song always builds me up and helps to put me in an overcoming attitude.
Don’t let the things of life move you to self-doubt, guilt, or anything that is less than. If you have a dream in life, go after it like an overcomer!
3) Peace Be Still – Lauren Daigle
When life feels like we’re walking through a storm it can put us in a dark and heavy place. It’s easy to let the waves of fear take over.
This song is a great declaration of the peace we can have in these types of moments.
If you feel like you’re walking through a dark time, let this song be your anthem! Let your faith rise up, let your heart believe, let the peace of God wash over you!

4) Fear is a Liar – Zach Williams
Have you ever stopped to think about what fear really is? Why is it that some people are afraid of certain things when others aren’t?
Fears are the results of stories we choose to believe. Ask yourself today, is the fear you have, a result of a story you are choosing to believe that isn’t true?
Is your fear a lie? Don’t let a lie hold you back from going after your dreams in life!
If your fears are based on lies, then this is a freeing song! Sing it loud and let go of the lies!
5) You Are My Deliverance – Gateway Worship
Overcoming our fears can feel like an impossible thing on our own. Often times we wish that someone bigger and stronger would come along to save us.
I want to encourage you today that no matter what you believe, there is always someone who will deliver you from a dark place. Never feel like you have to be in that place alone because you don’t. In fact, you don’t have to be in that place at all.
If you’re looking for a declaration to help set you free from fear, then this song is for you.
6) No Longer Slaves – Bethel Music
Similar to the song above, this one helps you declare both that fear can no longer have a hold on you and helps remind you of why.
This is another deliverance declaration. One that is meant to help set you free from the fear that holds you back in life, in your goals, and from chasing your dreams.
If you need an extra dose of freedom and declaring your freedom, then be sure to listen to this song loud and proud.
Bonus Song
Feeling inspired and ready to move on towards bigger and better things? I wanted to add these this bonus song. It’s less about overcoming fear and more about trusting what is in store for you as you move on.
Let words of this song flow over you like with sweetness as you prepare yourself to finally make that first step towards your future!
7) Give Me Faith – Elevation Worship
I hope you have found these songs to be as encouraging and uplifting as I have when it comes to facing and overcoming my fears!
